Best Beach Destinations Worldwide 2026: Where the Water Is Truly Amazing

11 May 2026 · 8 min read

There’s beach vacation and there’s beach vacation. The difference isn’t always price. It’s the choice of destination. The wrong beach in the wrong month is expensive money spent on disappointment.

This guide sorts the best beach destinations worldwide by traveler type. Not by prettiness, because most top beaches are beautiful. By what you actually want.

Which beach destination suits which traveler?

Here’s the honest breakdown.

For snorkelers and divers: The Maldives and Raja Ampat. The Maldives are world-famous for good reason: 1,200 coral reefs, hammerheads, manta rays, whale sharks from June to September. Water temperature year-round is 82 to 86°F. Raja Ampat in West Papua, Indonesia, is the expert destination. The highest marine biodiversity on earth. 1,500 fish species, 700 coral species. But harder to reach: fly to Sorong, then speedboat. The Raja Ampat Tourism board has official entry fees and seasonal closures.

For party and nightlife: Ibiza, Bali Kuta, and Mykonos. Ibiza is the benchmark. The most famous club culture in the world, sunset bars along the coast, DJ residencies from June to September. Kuta Beach in Bali is the cheaper, louder version: surf during the day, bars at night. Mykonos is luxury party: beach clubs with bottle service, elegant yachts in the harbor.

For families: Mallorca, Mauritius, and Turks & Caicos. Mallorca offers short flights from Europe, good water, and excellent children’s infrastructure. Mauritius is the family luxury destination of the Indian Ocean: protected lagoons with no surf or undertow, family-friendly resorts with kids clubs. Turks & Caicos (Grace Bay Beach) is considered one of the safest and most beautiful beach spots on the planet. Shallow, calm water, perfect visibility.

Off the beaten path: Seychelles, Palawan, and Milos. The Seychelles are expensive, but La Digue and Praslin are hard to beat if you want solitude and perfection. Palawan in the Philippines (Puerto Princesa, El Nido) has turquoise lagoons, dramatic limestone cliffs, and tourist infrastructure without mass market crowds. Milos in Greece is the underrated insider tip: white moonstone sand, clear Aegean water, almost no cruise ship day-trippers. Our Scotland Highlands road trip also shows that off-the-beaten-path doesn’t always mean tropical.

For surfers: Nazaré, Bali, and Costa Rica. Nazaré in Portugal has the biggest waves in the world. Autumn and winter: waves over 65 feet. This is for experienced surfers and spectators. Bali (Uluwatu, Padang Padang) is the classic: perfect reef breaks, warm water, good options for all ability levels. Costa Rica (Playa Hermosa, Jacó) is the most reliable surf destination in the region for beginners to intermediate surfers.

When is the best time for each top beach destination?

Timing is everything for a beach trip. The most beautiful destination in the wrong season is not a beach vacation anymore.

Maldives: November to April. Low rain, good underwater visibility. Peak season is December to March.

Ibiza / Mykonos: June to mid-September. Before and after is cold, clubs are closed.

Mallorca: May to October. School holiday July/August is expensive and crowded. May, June, and September are best.

Turks & Caicos: December to April. Hurricane season May to November, September/October critical.

Palawan (Philippines): November to May. Dry season, clear water. June to October is wet season, many boat tours suspended.

Milos (Greece): May to October, best in June and September. August floods the island with tourists.

Bali: April to October (dry season). November to March is monsoon season in the south, but the north coast often stays dry.

Costa Rica for surfing: May to November (dry season on the Pacific coast).

How much do the world’s best beaches cost?

Seychelles: $220 to $550.

How do you book the best beach destinations?

Three tips that save real money.

Book early for peak season. For Ibiza in August, Turks & Caicos in January, or Mykonos in July: at least four to six months in advance. Beachfront hotels with few rooms sell out fast.

Shoulder season over peak. May in Mallorca instead of July. June in Bali instead of August. You pay 30 to 50 percent less, the weather is equivalent, the beach is less crowded.

Local islands for the Maldives. Not all Maldives resorts are private islands. On local islands like Maafushi or Guraidhoo there are guesthouses from $88, public beaches, and actual local culture. Not the right fit for everyone, but a barely-known option for budget travelers.

What is the cheapest world-class beach destination?

Palawan in the Philippines offers the best value among global top beaches. Under $110 per night for a good guesthouse, fresh seafood for $6 to $9, boat trips to private beaches from $22. Thailand (Koh Lanta, Koh Tao) and Bali are similarly affordable.

When should you book for the Maldives?

For wet season travel (May to October), four to eight weeks’ lead time is enough. For peak season December to March: at least six to eight months in advance. Overwater bungalows at top resorts sell out a year ahead.

Which beach is best for families with toddlers?

Mallorca (Alcúdia, Cala d’Or), Mauritius (north and east coasts), and Turks & Caicos. All three have shallow calm water with no surf, short flight times from Europe, good pediatric facilities, and family resorts with children’s programs.
