Best Islands in the World by Type: Beach, Culture, Adventure and When to Go
Some islands look good on Instagram. Others change your life. The difference usually comes down to which one matches your travel style. The Maldives and Bali are both island destinations, but someone looking for diving, solitude, and nature will find completely different realities at each.
This guide sorts the world’s best islands by type. For each travel style, at least two concrete recommendations with real information on prices, timing, and logistics.
Which island suits which travel style?
A quick compass before the list:
- Beach and relaxation: Maldives, Seychelles, Turks and Caicos
- Culture and history: Sicily, Bali, Crete
- Adventure and nature: Galapagos, New Zealand’s South Island, Borneo
- Solitude and quiet: Faroe Islands, Azores, Socotra
- Budget and backpacking: Bali, Sri Lanka, Philippines
No island type is better than another. It depends on what you need right now.
Which beach islands are truly unique?
The Maldives is the standard reference, but not the only one. Over 1,000 atolls, crystal-clear water, house reefs right outside your room. Budget options exist on local islands from 80-120 euros per night. Overwater bungalows start at 400 euros upward. Best season: November to April.
The Seychelles offer similar water quality with a different topography: granite boulders, dense vegetation, iguanas on the paths. Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue are the three main islands, connected by short flights or ferries. Bali needs no introduction, but neighboring Lombok is calmer, cheaper, and home to the Rinjani volcano, one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular climbs. Not sure which fits you better? Our Bali vs Lombok comparison breaks it down.
For European beach islands, the Greek islands are unbeatable in variety. Milos for photographers and solitude, Mykonos for parties, Crete for history and hiking. A direct comparison is in the Greek Islands guide.
Which islands offer the best adventure and nature?
Galapagos, Ecuador. No destination on this list is harder to forget. You sit on a rock, a blue-footed booby lands 30 centimeters away and completely ignores you. The animals here are not tamed, they simply never learned to fear humans. Flights from Quito or Guayaquil, day tours and cruise options available. Budget: from 150-200 USD per day for organized tours.
Borneo (Malaysia/Indonesia) is enormous and nearly unparalleled: orangutan reserves, cave systems, and rainforest older than the Amazon. Kota Kinabalu as a base, with the diving destination Sipadan just off the coast. Our diving and snorkeling guide has more detail if underwater worlds are your focus.
New Zealand is often seen as a country rather than an island group, but it is one. The South Island especially: Fiordland, Milford Sound, Mount Cook. World-class for active travelers.
Socotra (currently hard to access due to the Yemen conflict) and the Faroe Islands are the extreme solitude options: dragon blood trees, misty landscapes, no mass tourism infrastructure. The Faroes are easy to reach via Copenhagen and are worth it for anyone seeking a quiet alternative to Iceland.
When is the best time to visit island destinations?
No universal answer, but here are the most common mistakes:
Maldives: October and November are monsoon months, grey and rainy. The high season from November to April is more expensive, but the water is calm.
Bali: Dry season is May to September. Peak season (July, August) gets very crowded. April and October are the sweet spots: smaller crowds, good weather.
Greek Islands: June to September. July and August are extremely hot and packed. May and September are often better.
Sri Lanka: More complex due to monsoon contrasts. West coast: November to April. East coast: May to September. Never book on one side without knowing where the monsoon is.
Galapagos: Year-round. December to May: warmer, slightly murkier water. June to November: cooler, clearer water, more wildlife sightings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which island is best for first-time visitors?
Bali is the classic entry point: affordable, well-connected, culturally rich, and with beach options. For first-time European travelers, Crete or Mallorca offer more comfort. If you want something more unusual without complicated logistics, the Azores are worth a look.
How much does a week in the Maldives cost?
A week on a local island (guesthouse) including a flight from Europe costs around 1,500-2,500 euros per person. In a resort, 7 nights can quickly reach 3,000-8,000 euros or more. There are essentially two different Maldives experiences depending on budget.
Which islands are least crowded?
The Faroe Islands, Socotra (hard to access), Milos in Greece, Naxos instead of Mykonos, or the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. In Asia: Koh Lanta instead of Phuket, Siquijor in the Philippines, or Karimunjawa in Indonesia.
What is the best island for families with children?
Mallorca wins for short flight times from Europe, calm bays, and solid infrastructure. Mauritius offers luxury family resorts with calm lagoon water. Bali is family-friendly and affordable, but hygiene and road traffic require some attention.
