Best Time to Visit Morocco: Spring, Fall, or Winter?

26 May 2026 · 6 min read

Morocco is broadly a year-round destination. But “year-round possible” doesn’t mean “equally good at any time.” A visit to Marrakech in August at 42°C, with parts of the medina in heat-induced stillness, is a fundamentally different trip from the same city in March at 24°C with rose season in full bloom in the Dadès Valley. The difference is worth planning for.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Marrakech and the Cities?

Spring and fall are the main seasons for Marrakech, Fès, and Meknes.

March to May: The best time overall. Temperatures between 18 and 28°C, blooming gardens, and excellent conditions for medina walks, market browsing, and day trips into the High Atlas. The rose fields of the Dadès Valley typically bloom in April and May. The Morocco cities guide covers what to prioritize across a spring circuit.

September to November: Also excellent. The worst summer heat has passed, the light turns warmer and more golden, and October brings quieter travel without spring’s crowds. For Sahara tours, October and November offer ideal conditions: not too hot during the day, spectacular night skies. The Morocco road trip route works best during this window.

December to February: Morocco in winter surprises most European visitors. In Marrakech and Agadir, daytime temperatures sit at 15 to 20°C. Cool evenings, but manageable for touring. The High Atlas has snow, and some mountain passes close. Anyone planning to cross the Atlas by road should check conditions in advance. Riad courtyards can be cold at night, so pack accordingly.

June to August: Extreme heat in inland regions. Marrakech regularly hits 40°C or above in July. The Atlantic coast (Agadir, Essaouira) is a different story: the consistent Atlantic wind keeps temperatures at a comfortable 22 to 27°C throughout summer.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Sahara?

For the desert and southern regions, the rule is clear: October through April.

Summer in the Sahara is brutal. Temperatures of 45 to 50°C are not unusual. Anyone planning camel treks, overnight camps, or sunrise at the dunes near Merzouga should travel between October and March. Nights in the desert are cold (0 to 10°C) but easy to manage with the right gear.

The Morocco road trip through the kasbahs and valley routes is doable without restrictions during this window.

What Does Ramadan Mean for Travelers?

Ramadan shifts roughly ten days earlier each year. Morocco during Ramadan is safe and welcoming, but the daily rhythm changes. Many restaurants are closed to non-fasting visitors during the day or have reduced hours. Evenings after iftar (the breaking of the fast) are lively and festive. Some travelers find Ramadan one of the most culturally immersive times to visit. Others prefer the regular calendar. Worth checking the dates in advance.

The Moroccan National Tourism Office maintains updated information on regional events and calendar considerations.

Which Coastal Towns Work Well in Summer?

Agadir and Essaouira are the exceptions to the summer heat rule. Both sit on the Atlantic coast. Essaouira is known for strong coastal winds that break the heat entirely and make it a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing in summer. Agadir has wide sandy beaches and well-developed resort infrastructure.

Anyone visiting Morocco in summer should base themselves on the Atlantic coast and avoid the interior.

For riad stays in Marrakech, spring is the ideal season. Courtyard evenings are warm enough to sit outside, and the gardens are at their best.
