Best Time to Visit Spain: When to Go by Region and Season

11 June 2026 · 7 min read

Spain is a seasons paradox. In August millions of tourists flood the coasts, Seville hits 40 degrees Celsius and hotel prices in Barcelona triple. In May of the same year everything eases: wildflower fields across the meseta, 22-25 degrees on the Costa Brava, rooms under 80 euros a night. The potential is huge when you choose your timing wisely.

The catch: Spain is not one country but many. Green, rainy Galicia in the north has completely different weather from Andalusia. The Canary Islands follow their own rules entirely. If you want to know when a trip is worthwhile, you need to look by region. Here’s an honest month-by-month breakdown.

When is the best time for each region?

Northern Spain (Basque Country, Galicia, Cantabria): Summer, June through September. The weather is mild rather than scorching, and San Sebastián with its pintxos culture is worth a trip year-round. July and August are popular on the coast, but never as overrun as the Costa del Sol.

Andalusia (Seville, Granada, Córdoba): Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the golden months. In spring the orange trees are in bloom, temperatures sit at 18-26 degrees, and Seville hosts Semana Santa (Easter) and the Feria de Abril. In summer, Seville and Córdoba become brutally hot (38-42 degrees), though Granada and the Alhambra are more bearable thanks to the altitude.

Barcelona and the Costa Brava: May, June and September are ideal. High temperatures without high-season prices, the sea is warm enough (22-24 degrees) and beaches aren’t a mass spectacle yet. July and August are manageable but Barceloneta apartments are expensive and the Sagrada Família without pre-booking means queuing for hours.

Madrid: Spring and autumn. The Spanish capital has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. In May the San Isidro Festival (bullfighting, flea markets, street parties) makes the city lively and relatively affordable.

Canary Islands: Viable year-round, but most popular from November to April for Europeans escaping winter. Winter temperatures: 20-24 degrees. In summer the trade winds keep the islands pleasantly cool. The Spanish Tourism Board has detailed regional climate data.

What do flights and hotels cost by season?

The price gaps are significant. A concrete comparison:

Peak season (July/August): Barcelona city-centre hotel 150-220 euros per night. Frankfurt-Barcelona flights (round trip) 180-350 euros. Rental car prices can double compared to shoulder season.

Shoulder season (May/June, September/October): Barcelona hotel 80-130 euros per night. Frankfurt-Barcelona flights 90-180 euros round trip. Noticeably fewer crowds at attractions.

Low season (November to March, except Christmas): Barcelona hotel 55-90 euros per night. Flights from 60-100 euros round trip. Barcelona temperatures: 10-16 degrees. Perfect for city trips focused on museums, restaurants and culture. Too cold for beach holidays.

The cheapest time to visit Spain is January/February. But if you want Spanish atmosphere with decent weather, October delivers the best value.

Which festivals and events should you know about?

Spain has some of Europe’s most vibrant festivals. Timing can mean the difference between joy and frustration.

Las Fallas (Valencia, 15-19 March): Giant papier-mâché figures burn at night. Midnight fireworks. Hotels in Valencia are fully booked weeks in advance, prices double. Want to go? Book six months out.

Semana Santa (across Andalusia, Easter): Silent processions, incense, hooded figures. Seville is the epicentre. Breathtaking and slightly eerie at the same time. Seville hotel prices during this week: 200-350 euros per night.

La Tomatina (Buñol near Valencia, last Wednesday of August): Tomato fight. Tickets cost 10-12 euros and must be bought in advance. Not on everyone’s bucket list but the experience is genuinely unique.

San Fermín (Pamplona, 6-14 July): Bull run through the old town. Hotels in Pamplona are booked a year in advance. If you still want to try: arrive very early or stay in surrounding towns.

La Mercè (Barcelona, 24 September): City festival with free concerts, castellers (human towers) and fireworks. Perfect timing for a September Barcelona trip.

How is Spain month by month?

January/February: Cheap, quiet, cool. Canary Islands as the warm alternative. Cádiz Carnival (February) is unforgettable and barely crowded.

March/April: Spring in Andalusia, Semana Santa, Las Fallas. Transition weather elsewhere. Great for hiking in Sierra Nevada or the Picos de Europa national park.

May: Best weather for almost all regions. Cool enough for cities, warm enough for southern beaches. Not yet at high-season prices.

June: Beach season begins. Sea temperature on the Costa del Sol: 20-22 degrees. Still reasonable hotel prices in most regions.

July/August: Peak season, peak prices, full beaches. Northern Spain (Basque Country, Asturias) is far more pleasant. Andalusia in the heat is tough for anyone not a tapas enthusiast.

September: One of the best months. Sea at its warmest (26-28 degrees in the south), high-season prices drop, school kids are back home. La Mercè festival in Barcelona.

October/November: Autumn in Galicia and on the Camino de Santiago is magical. Madrid’s museums (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen) at comfortable temperatures.

December: Christmas markets in Barcelona and Madrid. Vigo’s famous Christmas lights display. Canary Islands as a winter sun escape.
