Is Booking Genius Worth It? Honest Review of All 3 Levels

8 May 2026 · 6 min read

Booking Genius is Booking.com’s loyalty program. Three levels, increasing discounts and perks. Simple in theory.

But does it actually pay off? And does it make sense to route bookings through Booking.com just to move up a level?

What is Booking Genius and how does it work?

Booking Genius is free. Every Booking.com account starts at Level 1 automatically on signup. For Level 2: complete at least five bookings within two years. For Level 3: 15 bookings.

Benefits increase with each level:

Level 1 (immediate):

Level 2 (from 5 bookings):

Level 3 (from 15 bookings):

Is Booking Genius actually worth it?

Yes, with caveats. The key point: not all hotels participate in Genius. The discount applies only to Genius properties that show the badge in the listing. You can filter search results specifically for Genius hotels.

The actual discount varies. A participating hotel may have adjusted its base price slightly to fund the 10% discount. Price comparison still makes sense: Booking.com vs. direct hotel booking vs. other platforms.

Genius pays off most when you already book regularly: multiple trips per year, different cities. You’ll reach Level 2 or 3 quickly and unlock the better benefits.

If you travel once or twice a year: Level 1 is enough, and the basic benefits are real. No need to book strategically just to maintain the level.

Which Genius benefits are actually noticeable?

The most noticeable benefits are room upgrades and free meals at Level 2 and 3. An upgrade to a better room or complimentary breakfast can mean €30 to €80 in value per night that doesn’t show up in the headline price comparison.

The percentage discounts are real, but you typically see them only in comparison to the non-Genius price. On Booking.com, the Genius price is shown directly alongside the standard price when you’re logged in.

Genius Level 3: When is the effort worth it?

Level 3 requires 15 completed bookings. Regular travelers who use Booking.com as their main platform reach this organically in two to three years.

The Level 3 exclusive deals can be significant. Some luxury hotels offer suite upgrades or free transfers on Level 3. That can mean several hundred euros of annual value.

For frequent travelers: Booking Genius Level 3 is one of the most useful and entirely free loyalty schemes in the travel market. No annual fee, no minimum spend, no points expiring.

Do you lose your level if you stop booking?

No. Reached levels are permanent. You don’t need to book regularly to stay at Level 2 or 3. The program has no expiry conditions for levels already achieved. That’s a genuine difference from most airline programs with annual status resets.

Where to find the best Genius deals?

Directly on Booking.com with the active Genius filter. The Genius section in your account also shows how many bookings you still need for the next level and what current exclusive offers are available at your level.

Current terms for the program are on the official Booking.com Genius page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you reach Booking Genius Level 2?

Five completed bookings within two years. If you take two to three trips per year, you’ll hit Level 2 within a year. Bookings must be completed (checked in and out), not just confirmed.

What’s the difference between Genius and the Booking.com mobile app discount?

The mobile discount is an additional price advantage when booking through the app. It stacks with Genius: Genius 10% plus mobile discount 10% can mean 20% savings. Apply both in the same booking process for maximum savings.

Which bookings count toward Genius level upgrades?

All completed bookings on Booking.com, whether hotel, apartment, vacation rental, or other accommodation type. Even one-night stays count toward your level progress.

How does Booking Genius compare to Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy?

Genius is not a points currency but direct percentage discounts and service upgrades. For travelers without hotel brand loyalty, Genius is more flexible because it applies to hundreds of thousands of different hotels worldwide, not just one chain.
