Canada Travel Guide: The Best Highlights from Vancouver to Quebec
Canada is not a country. It is a continent in the shape of a country. Traveling here means making a choice: the wild west with glaciers and grizzly bears, the urban east with Toronto and Montreal, or the romantic coastlines of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Doing everything at once is not realistic. But the right piece of Canada is unforgettable.
This travel guide covers the key regions, what to expect there, when to go and what you need for entry.
Which region is worth visiting most in Canada?
The answer depends on what you are looking for. Canada is so large that each region is essentially a completely different trip.
Vancouver and British Columbia: The greenest, mildest corner of Canada. Stanley Park with its totem poles and seawall path, Granville Island with its Public Market, and two hours away sits Whistler, one of the best ski resorts in the world. Summer brings kayaking, whale-watching and hiking in the Coast Mountains. Vancouver is also a base for day trips to Salt Spring Island or Garibaldi Provincial Park.
Banff and the Rocky Mountains (Alberta): Canada’s most dramatic landscape. Lake Louise is the country’s most iconic image, turquoise glacier water in front of snow-capped peaks. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is considered the most beautiful highway in the world. Spotting grizzly bears is genuinely possible here, not in a zoo. Combine Banff and Jasper with a rental car, 3-5 days.
Toronto (Ontario): The CN Tower, Kensington Market with its international food scene, the Distillery District. And: Niagara Falls, just 90 minutes away. The falls are more impressive from the Canadian side. Toronto is urban Canada at its best.
Québec City: The French-speaking heart of Canada. Old Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only walled city north of Mexico in North America. In winter, the famous Carnaval de Québec takes place here (February). In summer: street musicians, terrace cafes, a piece of France in North America.
Prince Edward Island: Small, relaxed and literary. This is where Anne of Green Gables was written. Red sandstone coastlines, lobster fishing and lighthouse charm. Not for city travelers but perfect for anyone seeking nature and slower pace.
When is the best time to visit Canada?
Western Canada (Vancouver, Banff, Jasper): June to September. Banff and Jasper are accessible and beautiful in summer. Winter offers skiing in Whistler or Banff, but many hiking trails are closed.
Eastern Canada (Toronto, Quebec City, Maritimes): Year-round. Fall (September/October) is famous for autumn foliage, especially in Quebec and Ontario. Winter is cold but Quebec City in snow has its own magic.
Niagara Falls: Visitable year-round. In winter the falls are partially frozen and especially photogenic.
What entry documents do I need for Canada?
EU citizens do not need a visa for Canada, but they do need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization). Without it you cannot board the plane.
Apply online through the official Immigration and Citizenship Canada website. Cost: $7 CAD (around €5), processing time usually a few minutes to a few hours. The eTA is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires.
Important: apply for your eTA before purchasing your flight ticket, or at least weeks before traveling. Not at the airport.
How much does Canada cost and how do I plan domestic travel?
Canada is expensive. Restaurants, hotels and rental cars are above European prices. Budget 150-250 euros per person per day for mid-range accommodation and food.
The biggest planning challenge: distances. Vancouver to Toronto is 4,400 kilometers, roughly the distance from Lisbon to Moscow. Without domestic flights you cannot combine multiple regions.
Air Canada and WestJet fly the main routes. Domestic flight prices: 100-300 euros depending on route and booking timing. Booking early makes a significant difference.
Rental cars are ideal for Banff/Jasper and Prince Edward Island. Vancouver and Toronto have solid public transport.
