Ecuador and Galápagos: The Complete Travel Guide 2026

14 May 2026 · 8 min read

Ecuador is South America’s smallest country, but possibly the one with the highest biodiversity per square kilometer. Inland: Andean peaks above 5,000 meters, tropical rainforest, a capital sitting on the equator. Offshore: the Galápagos Islands, one of the world’s most important nature reserves. Charles Darwin sailed here in 1835 and had his epiphany about evolution.

This is not a destination for everyone. It’s a destination for travelers who want to see something genuinely rare.

What does Quito offer that other capitals don’t?

Quito sits at 2,850 meters in an Andean valley and has South America’s best-preserved colonial old town, designated by UNESCO in 1978 as one of the first World Heritage Sites. The Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, a 17th-century Jesuit baroque church, is considered one of the continent’s most ornate church interiors.

The Mitad del Mundo equator monument north of the city is a popular excursion. Worth knowing: the actual GPS equator line sits slightly off from the monument, which leads to entertaining guides. The nearby Inti Ñan Museum demonstrates the real equator point with live experiments.

The Quito cable car (Teleférico de Quito) up to Pichincha volcano at 4,050 meters offers views of the complete Andean skyline. Bring layers, it’s cold up there.

Quito’s old town deserves a full day. Start early, before the tour buses. Plaza Grande, Palacio del Gobierno, the churches of El Sagrario and San Francisco. Quito Turismo has current guided tour options and opening times.

What can you experience in the Galápagos?

The Galápagos are 45 islands in the Pacific, 1,000 kilometers off the Ecuadorian coast, where Darwin’s finches, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, and sea lions have less fear of humans than in any other wildlife reserve on earth. Why? Because there were never land predators there. The animals aren’t tame. They’re naive.

Snorkeling alongside marine iguanas that ignore you. Sea lions surfacing next to you and swimming away. Blue-footed boobies nesting 30 centimeters from your feet. That’s the Galápagos experience.

Liveaboard vs. day tours: the two ways to experience the islands.

Liveaboard (multi-night island cruise, 4 to 14 nights): More expensive, but you reach remote islands with fewer visitors. Better wildlife sightings, more species. Prices: 2,000 to 6,000 US dollars per person depending on vessel and duration. Book months in advance.

Day tours from Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal: Cheaper, more flexibility. The accessible islands (Santa Cruz, Española, San Cristóbal) are still impressive. The giant tortoise reserve on Santa Cruz and the sea lion colonies are reachable on day tours. Cost: 80 to 150 US dollars per day tour.

Mandatory fees: 20 US dollar Galápagos entry fee at the airport. Additional 10 US dollars if arriving by boat. Paid in cash or card.

When is the best time to visit Ecuador and Galápagos?

Ecuador doesn’t have a clear dry and rainy season like other countries. The coast is drier June through November. The Andean cities have their best weather October through January.

For Galápagos: two main seasons. June through September is cooler and clearer: better underwater visibility for snorkeling, fewer sea animals but better visibility. December through May is warmer: more animal babies, more breeding season, warmer water. Both periods are good; you optimize for different highlights.

Cotopaxi (5,897 meters), Ecuador’s most active volcano, is accessible to experienced climbers up to base camp elevation. Parque Nacional Cotopaxi has current access information.

What does an Ecuador-Galápagos trip cost?

Ecuador mainland is affordable. Daily budget in Quito: 40 to 60 US dollars for accommodation, food, and excursions. Galápagos, however, is Ecuador’s most expensive destination.

Flight Quito to Santa Cruz (Galápagos): 250 to 400 US dollars roundtrip depending on season. Entry fee: 20 US dollars. Accommodation on Santa Cruz: 60 to 150 US dollars per night. Day tours: 80 to 150 US dollars per day. For one week in Galápagos, budget 1,500 to 2,500 US dollars on the islands alone.

Entry: EU citizens enter without a visa, up to 90 days. Passport required.
