Greek Islands Compared: Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, or Rhodes?
Greece has over 200 inhabited islands. But when most travelers search for “Greece vacation,” they keep landing on the same four: Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes. Not by accident. These four cover nearly every type of traveler. But they’re as different from each other as islands can be.
Which one is right for you? Three questions decide it: What drains your energy most on a trip? What’s your actual budget? And what do you actually want to experience?
Why is Santorini so irresistible and so polarizing?
Santorini is the photo icon of Greece. White houses, blue domes, caldera views at sunset. Oia is currently the most photographed village in the world.
The problem: everyone knows that. In peak summer (July-August), up to 15,000 day-trippers arrive daily from cruise ships in Oia alone. The narrow lanes become standing room only. Hotels with caldera views cost $400 to $1,200 per night.
Santorini makes sense if you:
- Travel in May, June, or September (prices nearly halve, crowds too)
- Stay at least 4 nights (expensive to get here, too short doesn’t pay off)
- Specifically want the photo experience, not just as a side effect
- Have the budget for a boutique or luxury property
Santorini is the wrong choice if you want to relax on a beach. The volcanic island has almost no flat sandy beaches. The black beach at Perissa is lovely, but it’s not a postcard-perfect sandy shore.

When is Mykonos actually worth it?
Mykonos is Europe’s best-known party destination and simultaneously one of the most expensive places on earth. Club drinks cost $20-35 each. Some clubs require minimum spend of $300 per table.
For those who come for that, Mykonos delivers world-class party infrastructure. Paradise Beach and Super Paradise aren’t normal beaches. They’re venues with DJ sets starting at noon and running through the night.
Away from the party scene, Mykonos is simply beautiful. The windmill district, the chapels, the labyrinthine center: Mykonos Town is one of the most photogenic spots in the Aegean. And the northern beaches (Agios Sostis, Panormos) are quiet and wild.
Mykonos works for: partygoers 25+, well-heeled couples, design lovers. Not for families with children, backpack budgets, or people who go to bed early.
Book Mykonos hotels on Booking.com early. From March onward, July slots in good properties are often sold out.
Why is Crete the best Greek island for most travelers?
Crete is the honest answer to the question of the right Greek island for most people. Why? Because Crete has everything.
White-gold beaches like Elafonisi (pink sand tones, spectacular). Green mountain landscapes with hiking trails through Samaria Gorge (18 km, one of Europe’s longest). Venetian old towns in Chania and Heraklion. Tavernas with real Cretan cooking, not tourist-generic food. And prices significantly below Santorini and Mykonos.
Crete for all traveler types:
- Families: beach resorts in Rethymno, children’s pools, flat sea access
- Culture lovers: Knossos (Minoan palace complex), Heraklion Archaeological Museum
- Hikers: E4 long-distance trail, gorge walks
- Beach lovers: Elafonisi, Balos, Falassarna, Matala
Crete is the only one of these four islands you can stretch to more than a week without running out of things to do.

What makes Rhodes different from the other three?
Rhodes has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in the world. The city walls, the Grand Master’s Palace, the Street of the Knights: Rhodes Town is UNESCO World Heritage and rightfully so.
The island also has some of the windiest beaches in the Aegean on its west coast. Prasonisi at the southern tip is a world-class surf spot. Ialyssos and Faliraki are kite and windsurfing centers.
Price-wise, Rhodes sits between Crete and Santorini. Not as budget-friendly as Crete, not as brutal as peak-season Santorini.
Rhodes makes most sense if you want to combine history and beach. Or if you’re planning wind- or kitesurfing. Or if you travel late September/October when Crete and Santorini are already closing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Greek island is the cheapest?
Crete is by far the most affordable of the four major islands. Hotels, restaurants, and activities often cost 30 to 50 percent less than on Santorini or Mykonos. Rhodes sits in between.
When is the best time to visit the Greek islands?
May and June are ideal. Good weather, lower crowds, lower prices. September is also excellent. July and August: hot, expensive, crowded. For activities beyond the beach, May is the best choice.
Which Greek island is best for families with kids?
Crete. Large resort areas with shallow beaches, solid infrastructure, child-friendly tavernas, plenty of activities. Mykonos and Santorini are significantly less family-appropriate.
How many days should you spend on a Greek island?
Minimum 4 nights, ideally 6-7 nights on one island. Less doesn’t justify the expensive journey. For those wanting to combine two islands: Santorini and Crete by ferry is a classic combination.
