Indonesia Beyond Bali: The Real Highlights

14 May 2026 · 8 min read

Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country. It has over 17,000 islands. Bali is the most famous by far, but far from the most diverse. This guide shows you what you’re missing if you only book Bali.

What makes Yogyakarta Java’s cultural center?

Yogyakarta (Jogja) is Java’s cultural capital and the best base for the country’s two greatest temples.

Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple. Built in the 9th century, it consists of over 2 million stone blocks, 504 Buddha statues and 72 stupas. At sunrise, when mist drifts through the volcanoes around it, it’s one of the most striking sights in Southeast Asia. The Borobudur Temple conservation site is a UNESCO World Heritage property; tickets from $25 for foreign visitors.

Prambanan lies 17 kilometers east of Yogyakarta: Southeast Asia’s largest Hindu temple complex. 240 temples dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In the evenings, Ramayana ballet performances take place against the backdrop of the illuminated temple grounds.

Mount Merapi is Indonesia’s most active volcano, right on Yogyakarta’s doorstep. Lava tour jeep rides through the ash fields (cheap, slightly touristy but impressive) or crater trekking for those with the fitness for it.

What is Komodo National Park?

Komodo National Park sits in the Nusa Tenggara region between Bali and Lombok. This is where Komodo dragons live: the world’s largest lizards, up to 3 meters long, up to 90 kilograms. They’re predators. They’re not tame.

The islands of Komodo and Rinca offer guided walks with rangers who escort you through dragon territory. The waters around the park rank among the world’s best dive sites: giant mantas, whale sharks, coral.

Since 2023 there’s an entry restriction: only 200,000 visitors per year can set foot on Komodo Island (booking required via the park authority). Flores is the gateway, with a small airport in Labuan Bajo.

What is Sulawesi and why does it matter?

Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) is the least-traveled of the three destinations in this guide. Fewer tourists, maximum impressions.

Tana Toraja in southern Sulawesi is one of Asia’s most fascinating cultural regions. The Torajan people are known for their unique relationship with death: funeral ceremonies last for days, the deceased are kept in the family home until all relatives have arrived, sometimes weeks or months. Cliff graves, carved effigies, Tongkonan houses with curved, boat-shaped roofs. This isn’t a spectacle put on for tourists. It’s actively lived culture.

Lore Lindu National Park further north offers untouched rainforest, endemic birds and almost no crowds.

How do you travel through Indonesia?

Domestic flights are cheap and essential. Lion Air, Citilink, Batik Air connect all the islands. Prices: Bali to Labuan Bajo (Komodo) $30 to $80. Bali to Makassar (Sulawesi) $40 to $90. Book in advance.

Lombok is only 30 kilometers from Bali. Fast ferry (35 to 45 minutes from Padang Bai). Lombok is quieter, less developed, predominantly Muslim. Mount Rinjani (3,726 meters) is one of Indonesia’s finest trekking destinations: 3 to 4 days, a crater lake, and a summit. Book through official agencies in Senaru or Sembalun.

Entry: visa on arrival for 30 days ($35 USD). Extension possible to 60 days.
