Luxury Train Travel: What You Actually Get
Some trips are about getting somewhere. Others are about the journey itself. Luxury trains fall firmly into the second category. The Venice Simplon Orient Express has been running between London, Paris, and Venice since 1982. The carriages are restored originals from the 1920s. Dinner is a multi-course affair in the dining car. The martini at the bar is ice cold. You watch the Alps slide past the window and wonder if time actually slows down when the scenery looks like that.
But is it worth it? And for whom? Here’s an honest look.
What Do You Actually Get for the Money?
The VSOE starts at around 2,000 euros per person for the one-way journey from London to Venice. That sounds steep. It is. But you’re not buying a train ticket. You’re buying a cabin journey with two meals, bar service, cabin breakfast, and an experience that feels nothing like catching a flight.
Specifically: a private cabin with a bed, a washbasin, and a reading lamp. In the evening, the cabin steward folds the sofa into a bunk. The dining car serves a three-course dinner with wine. Breakfast arrives at your door. The journey takes around 24 hours. You pass through Paris, the Burgundy countryside, the Gotthard, and the lagoons approaching Venice.
For a different kind of grandeur, the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada offers a daytime experience through the Rockies. You sleep in hotels each night. The carriages have panoramic dome roofs. Prices start at roughly 1,000 euros per person for two days. You could drive through the Rockies and see the same mountains. But not from a curved glass ceiling with a glass of champagne in your hand.
Classic Luxury or Panoramic Train: Which One Is for You?
Not every luxury train costs four weeks of savings. There’s a full spectrum.
At the top end: the Venice Simplon Orient Express, El Transcantábrico in northern Spain (from 2,500 euros, a week-long journey through Cantabria and Galicia), and the Maharajas Express in India. Here you’re buying craftsmanship, nostalgia, and white-glove service.
In the middle: the Rocky Mountaineer and the Golden Pass Panoramic in Switzerland. The Golden Pass connects Montreux and Interlaken through two valleys and a mountain pass. Panoramic windows from floor to ceiling. Reserved but not exclusive.
At the affordable end of the luxury spectrum: the Bernina Express. It runs from Chur or Davos to Tirano in Italy. UNESCO World Heritage route. From around 100 euros. No dining car, no cabin steward. But the viaducts, the spiral loops, the Bernina Pass. Anyone who’s crossed the Brusio viaduct understands why people plan entire trips around it.
The Glacier Express connects Zermatt and St. Moritz. Eight hours, 91 tunnels, 291 bridges. Again: no full-service luxury, but one of the most beautiful rail routes on earth.

How Far in Advance Do You Need to Book?
As early as possible. That’s not filler advice. Specific VSOE departures sell out 12 months ahead. El Transcantábrico has limited spaces per departure. If you want to travel in summer, start looking in autumn of the year before.
A rough guide:
- VSOE London to Venice: 6 to 12 months for peak season (April through October)
- Rocky Mountaineer: 4 to 8 months, especially for Silver Leaf Plus cabins
- El Transcantábrico: 6 to 10 months; limited departures per season
- Bernina Express and Glacier Express: 2 to 4 months usually works, except during school holidays
Flexibility helps. Cancellations happen. But don’t count on the cabin of your dreams if you book last minute.

Is a Luxury Train a Good Honeymoon Trip?
Yes. Without hesitation.
A luxury train has everything a honeymoon needs: privacy, romance, and a sense of genuine occasion. You’re in a cabin with your partner. The world moves slowly past the window. Dinner is candlelit. There’s no pool and no spa. But there is something rarer: time that doesn’t disappear.
The VSOE has a dedicated wedding route. El Transcantábrico is ideal for couples who want to explore northern Spain without renting a car. The Rocky Mountaineer works perfectly if Canada is on your travel list.

The Glacier Express or Bernina Express in Switzerland. Lower prices, shorter journey, still stunning. For the full experience: a single night on the Venice Simplon Orient Express from London to Paris is a good introduction.
How far in advance should I book?
For peak-season VSOE and Transcantábrico routes: 6 to 12 months. For Swiss panoramic trains like the Glacier or Bernina Express: 2 to 4 months, or earlier during school holidays.
What’s the difference between a luxury train and a regular night train?
A regular night train in Europe 2026 gets you from A to B with a place to sleep. A luxury train is an experience product: curated dining, historic carriages, table service, atmosphere. The price difference is roughly 10 to 50 times.
Where does the Venice Simplon Orient Express go?
