South Africa Road Trip: The Best Route for Your Trip
South Africa is one of the most diverse destinations on Earth. In the morning you eat breakfast in Cape Town with Table Mountain in view. By evening you’re sitting in Kruger National Park listening to hyenas. In between lies one of the most beautiful coastal drives on the planet.
This route shows you how to cover the country best in 2 to 3 weeks.
Why is the Garden Route the best part of South Africa?
The Garden Route connects Cape Town with Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) along the southern coast. It’s not a single road but a region of diverse landscapes: mountains, forests, lagoons, sandy beaches.
Oudtshoorn sits slightly north of the route, famous for its ostrich farms. Touristy? Yes. But the Cango Caves nearby are genuinely impressive: a stalactite cave system stretching for kilometers underground.
Knysna is the centerpiece of the Garden Route. The lagoon, framed by two rock formations called The Heads, is one of the most beautiful natural panoramas on the coast. Swimming in the ocean is rough, the lagoon is calm. Fresh oysters eaten directly on the water’s edge are practically mandatory.
Tsitsikamma National Park offers dramatic cliffs, indigenous forests and the famous bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge (216 meters, one of the highest in the world). Hiking the Otter Trail is world-class but requires months of advance booking.
South African Tourism has good regional overviews to help with planning.
What should you not miss in Cape Town?
Cape Town is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. There’s far too much to do in a few days.
Table Mountain: Take the cable car up or hike. Clear skies with no “tablecloth” cloud cover is not guaranteed. Build in flexibility because the mountain does what it wants.
Cape of Good Hope: Not the southernmost point of Africa (that’s Cape Agulhas) but one of the most dramatic. Pelicans, baboons and rough Atlantic waves. About 90 minutes from the city by car.
Boulders Beach: African penguin colony near Simon’s Town. Thousands of penguins, just wandering around. Only in South Africa.
Winelands: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are 45 minutes from Cape Town. Wine estates, tastings, French-influenced architecture. A day trip is well worth it.
Bo-Kaap: Brightly colored houses on a hillside, one of Cape Town’s oldest neighborhoods. Great for photos but also real history.
When is the best time to visit South Africa?
It depends heavily on the region.
Cape Town and the coast (Western Cape): Dry season is November to April (southern hemisphere summer). Best time for the Garden Route and Cape Town. Warm, little rain. May to October is winter, with rain and cool days.
Kruger National Park: Best safari time is May to September (winter). Dry weather, low vegetation, animals congregate around water sources. Excellent game viewing. October to April is summer: hot and humid, but young animals are common.
For a road trip combining both regions: April to May or September to October are good compromise months.
How do you plan the Kruger National Park?
Kruger is one of the best self-drive national parks in the world. You drive your own rental car on dirt roads and find animals yourself. A different experience from guided safari but deeply satisfying.
Minimum stay: 3 nights. Better with 5. The rest camps inside the park vary in standard from basic huts to comfortable cottages. Book directly through SANParks, months in advance for peak season.
Important: South Africa drives on the left. If you’re not used to it, allow a day to adjust. An automatic transmission makes the learning curve easier.
For the Garden Route and Kruger, a normal car is fine. For more remote routes (northern Kruger, Swaziland border), 4WD is useful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a visa for South Africa?
EU citizens and many other nationalities don’t need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Entry requires a valid passport with at least 30 days’ validity beyond your departure date and at least 2 blank pages. US citizens can also enter visa-free.
How long should a South Africa road trip take?
For Cape Town plus Garden Route plus Kruger, plan a minimum of 14 to 16 days. Three weeks gives you enough time to add the Winelands, Blyde River Canyon or Drakensberg. Less than 10 days and everything feels rushed.
How safe is South Africa for tourists?
South Africa has high crime rates, especially in cities. For tourists on the classic route (Cape Town, Garden Route, Kruger), risks are manageable with basic common sense. Don’t display valuables, keep car windows up, stay in safe areas after dark. Avoid walking alone at night in urban areas.
What does a South Africa road trip cost?
Budget trip (self-drive, basic accommodation, self-catering): from $2,500 for 2 weeks. Mid-range (better lodges, restaurants): $4,000 to $6,000. Luxury (private game reserves, Cape Town sea-view hotel): no upper limit. Kruger entry: around $20 per person per day.
