Tanzania Travel Guide: Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro

14 May 2026 · 8 min read

Tanzania is the land of superlatives. The Ngorongoro Crater contains the densest concentration of wildlife on Earth. The Serengeti is bigger than Wales. Kilimanjaro stands as Africa’s highest peak above everything else. If you only visit East Africa once in your life, Tanzania makes a compelling case.

This guide helps you make the key decisions. Which parks first? When to go? What does it all cost?

What are the highlights of Tanzania?

Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous parks on the planet. It’s home to the largest animal migration on Earth: over 1.5 million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles circling through the ecosystem in an endless loop. The timing of the migration shifts with the seasons. TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) has updated information on fees and access.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a collapsed volcanic caldera, 19 kilometers across, walls up to 600 meters high. Inside lives a self-contained wildlife world: lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, black rhinos. UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. Day entry only, no overnight stays in the crater itself. But the lodges on the crater rim offer views that most safari photos can’t capture.

Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain (5,895 meters) and one of the few high-altitude peaks in the world accessible without technical climbing skills. The Machame Route is considered the most scenic and takes 7 days. Success rate with a full week’s acclimatization: around 85 to 90 percent. Shorter 5-day routes drop that significantly. Peak season is January to March and June to October.

Zanzibar sits just off Tanzania’s coast and is often added as a beach recovery stretch after a safari. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beaches on the northeast coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) are spectacular. Diving in the Indian Ocean around Zanzibar is world-class.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

June to October is the main dry season and broadly the best time to visit. Little rain, short grass, optimal game viewing. In the Serengeti, the migration moves north toward Kenya’s Masai Mara. The dramatic river crossings at Lamai Wedge and Kogatende happen here.

January to March is the short dry season. Fewer tourists than summer, often better prices. The wildebeest calving season happens in the southern Serengeti around January: thousands of calves born within weeks. This is genuinely unique in the world. Experienced safari travelers often prefer this window.

April to May is the main rainy season. Some camps close, roads become challenging. Cheapest prices but limited access.

For Zanzibar, October to March is most pleasant, especially for diving (visibility up to 40 meters from November to February).

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

Tanzania is more expensive than Kenya. Higher park fees, less infrastructure outside major parks, and strict regulations (no self-drive safaris in national parks) all contribute.

Budget safari (camping, group vehicles): $200 to $350 per day including accommodation, meals and game drives.

Mid-range (fixed lodges, smaller groups): $400 to $600 per day.

Luxury camps: $700 to $1,500 and up. Some mobile camps follow the migration and relocate 2 to 3 times per season.

Kilimanjaro trekking (Machame Route, 7 days): including mandatory guide, permits, porters and camp fees, roughly $1,500 to $2,500 USD. Fully inclusive with equipment and accommodation often runs $2,500 to $4,000 USD.

Flights from Europe to Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport: from around $550 to $800.

What are the entry requirements for Tanzania?

Most nationalities can get an e-Visa or visa on arrival. The e-Visa costs $50 USD and is applied for online. Apply in advance: on arrival can be slow during busy periods.

Yellow fever vaccination: mandatory for entry from certain countries. Malaria prevention strongly recommended, especially in low-altitude areas and on the coast.

Zanzibar uses the same visa as mainland Tanzania.

Serengeti or Masai Mara: Where is the migration better?

Honestly: both are part of the same ecosystem. The wildebeest move between both countries. From July to October, Masai Mara is where the action concentrates. From December to June, especially January to March, the southern Serengeti is the better choice.

Tanzania offers more wilderness and fewer crowds in most areas. Kenya is logistically easier, cheaper and simpler to organize. The ideal East Africa trip combines both. If you have to pick one: for the summer crossing spectacle, Kenya is easier. For depth, diversity and the calving season, Tanzania wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for the Serengeti?

For the Great Migration with river crossings: July to October. For the wildebeest calving season: January to March in the southern Serengeti. Generally the dry season from June to October offers the best game viewing because grass is short and animals gather around water sources.

How difficult is Kilimanjaro to climb?

No technical climbing equipment required. The main challenge is altitude sickness. With 7 days on the Machame Route, success rates sit around 85 to 90 percent. Good physical fitness is a prerequisite. Attempting the summit without a registered guide is not permitted.

How much does the Tanzania e-Visa cost?

The e-Visa costs $50 USD and is applied for online before travel. Visa on arrival is also available at a similar cost but can involve queues during busy periods. The e-Visa processed in advance saves time at the airport.

How do you combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?

The classic combination is 7 to 10 days on safari (Serengeti plus Ngorongoro) followed by 4 to 5 days in Zanzibar for recovery. Domestic flights from airstrips near the parks to Zanzibar cost $100 to $200. Most operators offer this as a standard package.
