US West Coast Road Trip: The Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to San Diego

14 May 2026 · 8 min read

The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the world’s most iconic drives. Not Route 66 cutting through the interior, but the PCH: cliffs, Pacific waves, Redwood forests, fog over the Golden Gate and the neon glow of Hollywood. Driving the US West Coast is an experience that stays with you.

This route runs from San Francisco to San Diego, around 560 miles that you can cover comfortably in 10 to 14 days. Longer is better. This guide covers the key stops, best timing and everything you need to know for a PCH road trip.

What is the best route for the Pacific Coast Highway?

The classic direction is north to south: San Francisco down to San Diego. You keep the ocean on your right side the whole way, which makes the views far better.

San Francisco (2-3 days): Golden Gate Bridge obviously, but also Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz (book online weeks in advance), the Castro district, Chinatown and a ride on the historic Cable Car. Stay in Nob Hill or the Mission District.

Monterey and the 17 Mile Drive (1-2 days): Around 120 miles south sits Monterey. The 17 Mile Drive is a private coastal road through Pebble Beach with a $12 entrance fee that is absolutely worth it. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the best in the world, especially for families.

Big Sur (1-2 days): The most dramatic stretch of the PCH. The road snakes along cliffs directly above the Pacific. McWay Falls drops 80 feet straight onto a beach. Pfeiffer Beach has purple sand due to manganese garnet deposits. Fill up your gas tank before Big Sur, prices there are steep.

Santa Barbara (1 day): Spanish colonial architecture, white-washed buildings and palm trees. Relaxed, elegant and far less touristy than LA.

Los Angeles (2-3 days): Venice Beach, Griffith Observatory with its view of the Hollywood Sign, The Getty, Silver Lake for a local feel. Rent a car with GPS in LA, public transport is limited.

San Diego (1-2 days): Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island by ferry, Balboa Park with the world-famous zoo. More relaxed pace than LA, a perfect way to wind down the trip.

When is the best time to drive the PCH?

May through October is peak season. July and August can get hot, especially south of Big Sur. But coastal fog, known as “June Gloom,” appears exactly in these months and can last for hours.

September and October are the best months. Less fog, fewer tourists than summer, comfortable temperatures. Hotels and rental cars are also cheaper.

Spring (April/May): Beautiful and green from winter rain, wildflowers bloom in Big Sur. Still cooler and windier than summer.

Winter is possible but not ideal. Many campgrounds close, and road closures in Big Sur happen after heavy rain from landslides.

Should you rent a car or a campervan?

Both work well. The choice depends on your budget and comfort level.

Rental car: More flexibility, cheaper base cost. You sleep in hotels or motels along the route. Budget around $90-180 per night for basic motels, more for comfort.

Campervan: Everything included, no daily hotel booking. Campgrounds cost $25-50 per night, KOA campgrounds are well equipped. The advantage: stop whenever you want, stay flexible, sleep right by the water. Downside: campervans are expensive to rent, $160-280 per day.

Driver’s license: Your EU license is valid in California. No international driver’s permit required, though carrying one as a backup document is a good idea. Minimum rental age is 21, under 25 often means a surcharge.

How much does a PCH road trip cost for two people?

Planning for 10-14 days, two people:

Flights from Europe to San Francisco, return: $750-1,300. Return flight from San Diego.

Rental car: $45-90 per day, $550-1,100 total. Plus gas: around 13-18 gallons for the full route, California gas prices currently around $4.80 per gallon.

Accommodation: $100-220 per night (motel for two), totaling $1,000-3,000.

Food: $55-90 per day for two with a mix of grocery shopping and restaurants.

Total for 2 people, 12 days: Around $4,500-7,500. Plenty of room to go higher or lower depending on accommodation standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to rent a car in California?

Your EU driver’s license is sufficient. You also need a credit card for the deposit (many providers don’t accept debit cards). An international driver’s permit is recommended as a backup document but not required. Visa or Mastercard credit card is essential.

How long does the Pacific Coast Highway take?

At minimum 7-10 days for the San Francisco to San Diego route. 12-14 days is better so you can make spontaneous stops. If you only have a week, choose one section rather than rushing the full route.

Which months should you avoid on the PCH?

January through March is off-season: bad weather, many campgrounds closed, road closures possible. June suffers from “June Gloom,” dense coastal fog especially in the mornings. Peak summer is expensive and crowded.

Where should you stay on the Pacific Coast Highway?

Motels directly along the route work well, especially in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Big Sur campgrounds must be booked months in advance. In LA and San Francisco, Airbnb often offers better value than hotels.
