7 May 2026 · 7 min read

Las Vegas is a city with a 4.2-mile main street. The Strip. On these 4.2 miles stand 30 of the world’s 50 largest hotels: Bellagio with the fountain, Caesars Palace with the Roman columns, Wynn with the Conservatory, MGM Grand with the Sphinx. Where you stay on the Strip decides which casinos you can walk to and how much Uber you need.

Here’s the honest breakdown: 4 areas, what they cost, who they fit.

Which area fits which trip?

North Strip: Wynn, Encore, Resorts World, Sphere. Premium, newer. For premium travelers.

South Strip: MGM Grand, NYNY, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay. Family, conventions, T-Mobile Arena. For families, sports events.

Downtown / Fremont Street: Old Vegas, neon-lit, cheaper. For boho, old-school Vegas, backpackers.

When is the best time to visit Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is desert, weather is extreme. The official Las Vegas tourism authority has a detailed event calendar (weekends with big events are 2-3x more expensive).

March-May and September-November: best time to visit. 65-82°F, perfect for pool. Hotels normal.

June-August: EXTREMELY hot (100-111°F). Pools crowded. Conventions in summer (Magic Mike, EDC, etc.) make hotels 50-100 percent more expensive.

December-February: cool (46-65°F), pools usually closed. CES convention (early January) makes hotels temporarily 3x more expensive. Otherwise cheaper.

Important: Weekend prices (Fri/Sat) are systematically 50-100 percent higher than weekday (Sun-Thu). Arrive Sunday, leave Thursday = max savings strategy.

South Strip: Family Vegas

South area of the Strip with MGM Grand (largest hotel in the world with 6,852 rooms), New York-New York (roller coaster around the skyline), Excalibur (castle theme, family-focused), Mandalay Bay, T-Mobile Arena (concerts, hockey). Family-focused, convention site, often cheaper.

Who fits: Families (NYNY roller coaster, Excalibur castle, Mandalay Beach pool), sports event visitors (T-Mobile Arena, Allegiant Stadium next door), convention attendees.

Top picks: MGM Grand (classic premium, largest hotel in the world), Mandalay Bay (premium with beach pool), Excalibur Hotel (mid-range family theme).

3 miles north of the Strip by Uber. The original Vegas of the 1950s-1960s. Fremont Street Experience (covered street with LED ceiling), Heart Attack Grill, Old Vegas casinos (Plaza, Golden Nugget, Fremont). Very neon-lit, cheaper, less polished.

Who fits: Boho, old-school Vegas lovers, backpackers, photo lovers (neon signs).
