Best Hotels in Matera: Where to Stay in Each Area 2026

11 June 2026 · 8 min read

Matera is not a normal city. The Sassi, the ancient cave dwellings that run through two deep ravines (Gravine), are a UNESCO World Heritage Site now converted partly into luxury hotels, partly into simple B&Bs. Sleeping here means: staying in a modern room inside a cave that humans have inhabited for 10,000 years.

The biggest decision you’ll make in Matera is not which hotel, but whether you sleep in the Sassi or in the new town (Piano). The Sassi are more expensive, more spectacular, and unforgettable. The Piano is cheaper, more modern, more practical. Both choices have their place depending on your priorities.

Which Area Fits Which Type of Trip?

Matera divides into three broad zones:

Sasso Barisano: Where Do You Sleep at the Heart of the Cave City?

Sasso Barisano is the more accessible of the two Sassi areas. Paths are better lit, restaurants more numerous, and most Sassi hotels are located here. First-timers are better placed in Sasso Barisano than in the wilder Sasso Caveoso. Cave hotel prices start around 120 euros per night and quickly reach 200-300 euros for suites with views.

Sasso Caveoso: Is the More Adventurous Choice Worth It?

Sasso Caveoso sits deeper in the ravine and is less touristy than Sasso Barisano. From here you look across to the ancient rock churches (Chiese Rupestri) carved into the opposite canyon wall. Fewer restaurants nearby and steeper paths up to the main streets. But for travelers looking for a quieter, more authentic version of the Sassi, this is the pick.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Matera?

Spring (April, May) and autumn (September, October) are the best months. Temperatures sit at 18-25 degrees Celsius, visitor numbers are manageable, and the light in the Sassi is warm and atmospheric. Summer makes Matera hot (up to 36 degrees), and the pale tufa stone amplifies the heat. Winter is mild (10-15 degrees) but can be overcast.

Matera was European Capital of Culture in 2019. Since then, the city gets significantly more visitors in summer. The official Matera tourism website has current event listings.

The New Town (Piano): Who Stays Here and Why?

Anyone spending less than 80-100 euros per night, or arriving by car and needing parking, chooses the new town. The walk into the Sassi takes 10-15 minutes. All modern amenities are available. The atmosphere is that of a normal southern Italian small city, without the spectacular Sassi setting.

Which Area Is Best for Special Occasions?

For weddings, milestone birthdays, or landmark trips, a cave hotel in the Sassi is the unforgettable choice. Nothing in Europe compares. A cave suite overlooking the illuminated Sassi at night is an experience you’ll describe for decades. Premium suite prices: 300-500 euros per night. For regular city breaks, the new town works fine.

Where Should You Actually Book?

Booking.com has the best selection for both Sassi hotels and new town accommodation. The map filter shows you exactly which zone each property sits in. Enable free cancellation: Matera is not easy to reach, and a cancelled flight usually means a cancelled hotel too. Book early for April through October, as Matera has drawn significantly more visitors since its 2019 Capital of Culture year.
