Zanzibar Stone Town: What Nobody Tells You 2026

7 May 2026 · 7 min read

Zanzibar is sold as Indian Ocean beach paradise with white sand and turquoise water. The beaches are real. But the heart of the island is Stone Town — a 200-year-old port city, UNESCO World Heritage, with a complicated history between Arabs, Indians, British and Africans. Most tourist programs stop here for 1 day and rush to the beach.

Here’s the honest guide. What Stone Town really is and how to experience it right.

What is Stone Town and why should you care?

Stone Town is the historical port city of Zanzibar City, founded in the 19th century by Omani sultans as a trading center. Until 1873 it was one of Africa’s largest slave trading places — 50,000 slaves per year were sold here. Today UNESCO World Heritage since 2000.

The architecture is unique: Arab courtyards with fountains, Indian balconies with carved windows, British colonial buildings, Swahili street life. All in 0.6 square miles. No car traffic in the narrow alleys. Secrets behind carved doors, of which Zanzibar has 800+ (each with its own symbol system).

Why spend more time here? The island beach resorts are interchangeable (you could also be in Phuket or Sri Lanka). Stone Town exists only once in the world.

Which sights must you really visit in Stone Town?

The honest top list, with time recommendations:

1. Old Slave Market & Anglican Cathedral (1.5h, MUST). The former largest slave market in Africa. Today museum with the original slave cellars (very moving). The Cathedral was built directly on the former slave market as a symbol. Entry $7. The official UNESCO description gives background information.

2. Forodhani Night Market (daily 6-10pm, MUST). The famous street food market at the harbor. Zanzibar pizza (own invention with egg and ground meat), octopus skewers, fresh squeezed sugarcane juice. $5-15 for 3 courses. Touristy but legendary.

3. Sultan’s Palace Museum + House of Wonders (3h together, MUST). Both directly at the harbor. Sultan’s Palace shows the life of the Omani rulers. House of Wonders was the first multi-story building in East Africa with elevator in 1883. IMPORTANT: House of Wonders has been closed since 2020 due to risk of collapse, view from outside.

4. Guided city tour (3-4h, highly recommended). Stone Town is a labyrinth (no smartphone GPS works in narrow alleys). A guided tour with local guide gives history, context, personal stories. $33-55 per person.

5. Spice tour (half day, optional). Zanzibar = spice island. Tour to local spice plantations with tasting of vanilla, cloves, cardamom directly from the soil. Touristy but educational. $28-44.

See our Cape Town guide for the African southern variant.

When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?

Zanzibar has tropical climate with two rainy seasons. The official Zanzibar Tourism Authority has a detailed seasonal calendar.

June-October: best time to visit. 72-82°F, dry, sunny, perfect for beach and Stone Town. Hotels 30-50 percent more expensive than shoulder season.

December-February: second-best. Similar weather, slightly hotter (82-90°F), Ramadan effect to consider (restaurants change opening hours in Stone Town).

March-May: long rainy season. Daily rain, very humid. Hotels cheapest, but little beach fun.

November: short rainy season. Shorter and milder than March-May. Hotels still cheap.

Important: Zanzibar is 99 percent Muslim. During Ramadan (variable, usually March-April) many local restaurants are closed during the day, Stone Town is quieter. Beach resorts are not affected.

Where should you stay in Stone Town and on Zanzibar?

Stone Town and beach are TWO very different Zanzibar experiences. Most travelers combine: 2-3 nights Stone Town + 4-7 nights beach resort.

Stone Town (for history and atmosphere):

Nungwi (north coast, lively): for young travelers, good snorkeling spots, many bars.

Kendwa (northwest, quiet): premium beach resorts.

Paje / Jambiani (east coast, perfect sand, less developed): for slow travel and kitesurfers.
