Best Autumn Travel Destinations: September, October, November

9 May 2026 · 7 min read

Autumn is the most underrated travel season. The crowds have left. Prices drop. Light turns warmer. Some destinations only show their real face when the high-summer rush is over.

Travelers who go in September, October, or November often get hotels and flights 20-40 percent cheaper than in August. At some destinations even more. At the same time, the weather in many regions is still excellent, or only becomes truly good in autumn.

Which destinations are at their best in September and October?

Tuscany (Italy): The grape harvest happens September through October. Rows of vines in golden tones, cypress trees, Chianti hills. Fewer tourists than in August. Agriturismo prices fall 20-35 percent. This is the Tuscany of the postcards, but actually enjoyable.

Greece (Crete, Rhodes): October is the secret month. Sea temperature 72-75°F (still warm enough to swim). Hotels often 40-50 percent cheaper than August. Attractions without queuing. Many resorts don’t close until late October.

Portugal (Alentejo, Douro Valley): September and October are the best travel time. Wine harvest, golden light, temperatures 72-82°F. The Douro Valley in autumn is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Europe. Visit Portugal has information on wine festivals.

Morocco: October is high season in Morocco. Extreme summer heat gone, Atlantic water temperatures still pleasant. Marrakech in October is dramatically more bearable than July or August.

Why is November an underrated travel month?

November is the best month for specific destinations that are unsuitable in summer.

Madeira: November on Madeira is a quiet insider tip. Temperatures 68-73°F, no peak season crowds, hiking trails clear, levadas green. Cheaper flights from most of Europe than in summer months. The island works year-round — but November is especially calm.

Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang): November is transition time. Southern Vietnam is dry. Prices affordable. Tourist season only starts in December. Those who go in November have things largely to themselves.

Canary Islands: The Canaries work year-round, but November is special: 72-75°F, no heat waves, Europeans not yet arriving in numbers. For hikers, Tenerife in November is ideal.

Japan in autumn (late October to mid-November): Koyō, the Japanese autumn foliage, is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. Kyoto and Nikko in this period: unparalleled. But also: expensive and crowded. Early booking is essential.

What are the cheapest autumn travel destinations in Europe?

Albania: October and November are the best months. Pleasant weather, no crowds, minimal prices. Albania’s Riviera empties after September. The country is recognized as a budget destination while remaining completely authentic.

Romania (Transylvania): October with autumn foliage in the Carpathians, Dracula season (touristy but fun), Brașov and Sibiu without peak-season prices. Hotel nights in excellent properties from $48-65.

Poland (Kraków, Warsaw): Cooler in October but Kraków is stunning in autumn. Jewish history, medieval old town, Wawel Castle. Prices below Western European comparable cities.

Crete, Rhodes, and Cyprus have sea temperatures of 72-75°F in October. The Canary Islands year-round at 64-72°F. Southern Spain (Andalusia, Costa del Sol) still pleasantly warm in October. Everything north of that: too cold to swim.

How does autumn travel differ for solo travelers vs. couples vs. families?

Solo travelers benefit most from autumn: single room prices drop sharply, crowds are gone, easier to connect with other travelers in shoulder season. Couples: ideal for romantic European cities in autumn light. Families: constrained by school schedules, use the October half-term break.
