Most Beautiful Places in Spain: 6 Destinations Beyond Barcelona

12 June 2026 · 7 min read

Spain is the second-largest country in Western Europe and one of the most varied travel destinations anywhere. Atlantic-battered coasts in the north, whitewashed mountain villages in Andalusia, extraordinary cathedrals, the Canary Islands with their year-round spring, the Balearics with pine forests and coves. All of it reachable from most European airports in two to three hours.

This guide covers the six most beautiful places in Spain. Not just Barcelona and Madrid, but the destinations that seasoned travelers consistently highlight. Something for every type of trip.

Which regions of Spain are genuinely worth the journey?

Andalusia is visually the richest region in Spain. Whitewashed mountain villages (Pueblos Blancos), the Moorish architecture of the Alhambra in Granada, the Cathedral-Mosque of Cordoba (La Mezquita), flamenco in Seville, sherry in Jerez. Behind it all: the Costa de la Luz, one of Europe’s wildest coastlines with Atlantic swells and almost no package tourists.

The Alhambra is one of the most visited sites in Europe, and it earns that status. Palace, fortress, and garden complex built over centuries by Moorish rulers. Tickets need to be booked weeks in advance. Entry is around 14-18 euros. The official Patronato de la Alhambra website is the only reliable source for tickets.

Ronda is the most famous of the Pueblos Blancos. The cityscape on a ridge above the El Tajo gorge is one of the most photographed in Spain. Small, walkable, quiet in September and October. Day trip from Malaga or Marbella: about 90 minutes by bus (3-5 euros).

Why does Mallorca reward travelers who get off the resort strip?

Mallorca has an image problem that doesn’t match reality. Yes, the all-inclusive resort belt exists. But the island also has the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with hiking trails, ancient olive terroves, and medieval mountain villages like Valldemossa and Deia. The northern coast has no hotel complex in sight.

The Cap de Formentor peninsula in the northeast is considered the most dramatic coastal landscape in the Balearics. Limestone cliffs, a lighthouse at the edge of the world, deep blue water. In summer, a shuttle bus runs to the summit (private car access is restricted, about 7 euros). In autumn and spring, the peninsula is almost deserted.

For a comparison between the Canary Islands and Mallorca, see our Canary Islands Comparison guide. For accommodation in Palma, our guide on where to stay in Palma de Mallorca covers the neighborhoods.

Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) is not Mallorca, but belongs among the most beautiful places Spain has to offer. White sand dunes at Corralejo, world-class windsurfing at Costa Calma, nearly empty beaches away from the resort areas. Average winter temperature: 22 degrees Celsius.

Where is the wildest landscape scenery in Spain?

The Picos de Europa are the most dramatic mountains in northern Spain and one of the few genuine wilderness areas in Western Europe. Located in Cantabria and Asturias, barely 20 kilometers from the coast: glacier-carved peaks, karst terrain, brown bears, griffon vultures. The national park was established in 1918, one of the oldest in Europe.

The Cares Gorge trail (Ruta del Cares) is the classic hiking highlight: 11 kilometers one-way, carved into a limestone canyon with the Cares river 500 meters below. Starting points at Poncebos or Cain. No equipment beyond solid footwear needed. Difficulty: moderate.

On the northern coast itself: San Sebastian (Donostia) is considered one of the best culinary destinations in Europe. The pintxos bars in the old town are essential. It also serves as a base for coastal road trips along the Basque Country.

The Costa Brava north of Barcelona is the opposite of the Costa del Sol. Rocky coves, medieval villages like Tossa de Mar, the Dali museum in Figueres, and a crowd that is mostly Catalan and French. Less mass tourism, more substance.

How much does a Spain trip cost per day?

Spain remains cheaper than France or Italy, but more expensive than Portugal or Eastern Europe. Mid-range travelers in Madrid or Barcelona budget around 80-110 euros per day. In Andalusia or on the northern coast, 60-80 euros is more realistic. Mallorca and the Canaries vary widely depending on hotel type.

Food is where Spain offers real value. A three-course lunch menu (menu del dia) costs 10-14 euros in Andalusian towns, 14-18 euros in Barcelona. Evening tapas rounds are often cheaper than full sit-down dinners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the most beautiful region in Spain?

Andalusia offers the greatest visual variety: white villages, Moorish architecture, Atlantic coastline. The north (Picos de Europa, San Sebastian) is wild and far less touristy. Mallorca and the Canaries are ideal for beach and nature trips.

When is the best time to visit Spain?

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the best windows. Andalusia in summer reaches 45 degrees and is barely tolerable for sightseeing. The Canaries and Mallorca are appealing year-round. Barcelona and Madrid are particularly good in September.

How much does the Alhambra in Granada cost?

Currently 14-18 euros depending on the time slot and area. Book via the official website only; certified resellers often charge double. Tickets sell out weeks in advance, especially in spring and autumn.

How far is Ronda from Malaga?

About 100 kilometers, roughly 90 minutes by bus (3-5 euros) or 1.5 hours by car. Several operators offer guided day trips from Malaga for 25-40 euros. Doable as a day trip, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the town after the tour groups leave.
